Fireplace Decor Ideas

When you think of decorations for your mantel, there are some common choices:

  • Photos
  • Candle Sticks
  • Centerpieces
  • Floral Arrangements
  • Signs
  • Mirrors
  • Clocks
  • Plants
  • Garlands

Wreaths aren’t as common, but they actually make great choices.

In most cases, people only use these around the holidays. But a wreath is actually the perfect decoration for any time of year.

This is largely because of their shape and size. The circular shape helps them complement the symmetry that’s usually present on a mantel. And their size is enough to stand out, even against a larger mantel.

They’re use of color and texture also makes them a fitting focal point for the room.

OF course, the holiday season is the perfect time to decorate the space around your hearth.

While these decorations are most often seen outside during the winter, they’re perfect indoors as well. Just keep in mind that you’ll want to stick to artificial options, and not fresh ones.

Fresh evergreen is best used outdoors. That’s because the cold temperatures can keep it looking gorgeous throughout the season. Indoors, they’ll quickly dry out and turn yellow.

Here are some great artificial options:

During Christmas time, it’s nice to go with something that has a lot of embellishments. Options with classic holiday colors like red, gold, and silver, are always a good choice. You can also go with options that are pre-lit.

But don’t forget that you can add in embellishments as well. Most options are easy to decorate by hand, which opens up more possibilities. You can create more unique color schemes and themes, to suit your tastes.

These are all relatively neutral options. They don’t have an particularly bold foliage, flowers, or colors, so they suit any occasion.

The downside to these sorts of options is that they look plain. They’re certainly not as fun or lively as other options.

But there is an easy fix for that!

With any plain decoration, you can easily add in some seasonal embellishments.

For example, you can have different color bows that you switch out, to compliment holidays and season. You can also attach different ornaments or signs. Depending on the option, you can even add in flowers and dried elements.

There’s a lot of ways to dress up a plain base, so don’t be afraid to try it out.

Extra Large Wreaths for Above Fireplace

When it comes to sizing, the most important factor is the size of your mantel. These decorations come in a variety of sizes, from as small as 4″ to as large as 60″, if not larger.

So the issue is how large the decoration is relative to your mantel. (For reference, most mantels are between 5-7 feet long.) That’s going to determine what size wreath over fireplace you need.

If you have a smaller mantel, around 5 feet or less, then a 14-24″ wreath is going to be suitable.

For a larger mantel, obviously you’ll need a larger decoration. Something in the range of 30-40″ will look well proportioned for mantels around six feet.

If you want to get a visual for your specific needs, measure out the width of the wreath in the center of your mantel. That will tell you whether or not the wreath is looks too large or too small.

You can also cut out a cardboard circle and hold it up, to see how it fills the space. (Keep in mind that you can get away with a rough cut. No need to make things difficult on yourself by cutting a perfect circle.)

It’s also important to note that larger decorations are more expensive. If you want a larger size, you have to pay for all the extra materials.

Luckily, there are ways you can DIY large options for cheap. Check out some tutorials like this one, for more ideas:

How to Hang a Wreath on a Fireplace

The main issue with any fireplace is how to hang decorations. Typically, these spaces are designed with tricky materials, like tile and brick. Both materials are difficult to work with, since they’re very sturdy yet delicate.

You almost have to treat them the way you would glass.

Luckily, hanging materials is not impossible, you just have to understand your options.

Safety First

Before you add any decorations, you need to consider what will be your safest option.

While putting decorations above and around the mantel is popular, it’s not always safe. After all, all these decorations are going to be in close contact with high heat and potentially even sparks.

Check out some good, safe mantel decorating guides before you begin. And make sure you’re keeping everything as safe as possible.

And never keep anything flammable on the floor, near the fire, when in use. Move any floor decorations to a safer part of the room, and only move them back when the hearth is cold.

Non-Hanging Options

With that said, the easiest option is not to hang decorations at all. You can simply rest them up against the wall, on the mantel. This option is popular for picture frames as well.

But keep in mind that this isn’t going to be secure. You certainly don’t want to do this with an option that’s heavy, or larger than 20″. These options will tip over much easier than smaller, lighter ones.

For extra security, you can also use hanging tape along the back. The tape won’t support the weight of the decoration, but it will help keep it from sliding around.

Other Options

When it comes to properly hanging up your decorations, the main concern is the material of your walls.

Modern fireplaces tend to be covered with tile. While this looks good, it limits your options since you have to preserve the surface of the material.

You can’t use easy options, like nail, since those will damage, and maybe even crack the tile.

More traditional spaces utilize brick. Unfortunately, brick is one of the most difficult materials to work with. Although you can use nails or screws, you have to be very careful. A nail in the wrong spot can crack or even shatter a brick.

You shouldn’t drill or hammer things directly into the brick itself, but rather, into the mortar. That’s the mixture put in between the bricks to help keep them secure.

This process is still tricky, and it also requires power tools. If you are going to go this route, I recommend watching a few tutorials first, like this one.

So if nails and screws are out, how do you hang things?

Well there are a few ways to hang decorations without damaging the surface they’re on. They may not be as secure and sturdy, but they’ll still work well and last.

For tile and other smooth surfaces, adhesive hooks are your best bet. Command hooks and other, similar products are secure and don’t cause damage. The other benefit of these is that they’re easy to remove and then replace as needed.

If you’re using temporary décor, this is obviously preferable. Since it’s temporary, you want something that you can use and remove quickly and easily.

Unfortunately, these don’t work well on rough surfaces, such as brick. For brick, the alternative is to use brick clips. These grab onto the bricks themselves, so there’s no need to drill a hole or hammer anything. Like adhesive hooks, they’re also temporary, so they’re ideal for seasonal décor.

The downside to these is that they only work if there is some brick exposed to clip onto. If the mortar is flush with the brick, then they won’t be effective.

As you can see, there are a few difficulties if you want to properly hang your decorations. However, with the right tools and knowledge, it can be done.
